Charity Talk

So, I don't think I mentioned this, but my hubby and I were asked to speak this Sunday on CHARITY.

When first asked, I was very excited and just looking forward to it. I have never once heard Steve speak ( bear testimony but not speak) and we have never done talks as a couple---married. So we are very excited.

It is this sunday, so very soon, but if anyone has any suggestions on the topic charity, we would love to hear them!!!

I always like talks where people focus on Christ's life--and what charity really is, by going straight to the scriptures. I think we have a pretty screwy idea of what charity truly is (we only think of it in "giving" or "pity" which it really isn't, rather than teaching, loving discipline, forgiveness, realistic by high expectations paired with real justice and mercy--rather than just "how to feel charitable). Anyway--that's my take on it. I always enjoy talks when they come straight from the scriptures, rather than people's re-interpretations (which could be right or wrong).

What a fantastic topic to be speaking on! I recommend you go back and re-read the last chapter of Stephen Robinson's book "Following Christ (the sequel to "Believing Christ"). The entire chapter talks about love and the Prime Directive of the Gospel and makes a HUGE impression in understanding charity as God would have us understand it.

I agree with both of those comments. I really think people should focus on charity as who you are rather than what you do. Just because you give money to the poor or help your neighbor mow the grass doesn't mean you have charity, even though those are good things.

Yes, many people mistake the difference between being generous and being charitable. Definitely you should make a delineation there.

In the scriptures the Lord tells us that we can ask and we shall receive. One of the prophets (I think it was Nephi) also said that he prayed with all the energy of his soul for something. If we truly took the time to pray with all the energy of our soul for charity and to see other people the way the Lord sees them, I think we would be surprised and amazed at how easy some of the other things we are commanded to do are (like forgiveness, no evil speaking etc) AND how easy having charitable qualities added to our character can be.
